THE INEVITABLE COLOUR FADE

July 31, 2024

A guide to managing your clients expectations – because we know they want your amazing work to last!

We know you love to see your clients walk out of the salon with the most jaw-dropping hair colours: a showcase of your expertise and hours of work. As professional hair colourists, we all know that maintaining vibrant, long-lasting hair colour is a common concern for clients. And if it’s not, it should be!

From the client’s point of view, they’ve spent a lot on their amazing new vivid colour and want to make sure they maintain that as long as possible. Educating your clients and arming then with the right advice and a recommended hair care regime tailored to their own needs will give them the tools they need to look after their new vivid hair.

Here’s a guide to help you advise your clients on managing colour fade and prolonging their hair colour.

Why Does Colour Fade? The Lowdown

The most important piece of information to share with your clients is that Crazy Color Semi-Permanent colours were made to fade, that’s the beauty of them. Especially for those clients who are colour chameleons!  So essentially they will see a difference in the colour from that first wash.

However, there are other contributing factors as to why that bomb colour doesn’t stay forever:

  • Sunlight Sabotage: Those UV rays are colour’s worst enemy, breaking down those stunning hues. We all know what it does to our skin, our hair is also affected every day!
  • Scale back on the washing: Over-washing strips colour faster as shampooing strips the hair of natural oils and can be more impactful on colour if they are not using an at home routine made for coloured hair;
  • Heat Damage: Cranking up the heat with styling tools opens up the hair cuticle and lets that colour escape;
  • Water Woes: Hard water and minerals in it can be a sneaky culprit for colour running down the drain;
  • Chemical Chaos: Chlorine and saltwater? Total colour killers. Advise them to protect their hair or avoid altogether.

What to Advise:

  1. Pick the Right Products:
    • Sulphate-Free All the Way: Push those sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners. They’re gentler and protect colour so much better. Try Crazy Color Colour Extend Shampoo and Rainbow Care Conditioner which are both formulated to maintain the health of hair and prolong colour.
    • Colour Boosting Shampoos + Masks: Suggest shampoos that deposit a hint of colour with every wash. You can recommend Crazy Color Vibrant Colour Shampoo’s or send them away with a bottle of Crazy Color Power Pigments and the Crazy Color Bond Recovery Treatment: the next time they wash their hair just mix the colour into the hair mask and leave it on to work its magic. Both act as a mini touch-up in a bottle, perfect for keeping colour fresh between salon visits.
  2. Smart Washing:
    • Less is More: Tell clients to wash their hair less often, twice a week if they can. Let that natural oil do its thing!
    • Cool it Down: Recommend washing with cooler water. Hot water can open the hair cuticle, causing colour to wash out faster.
  3. Heat Protection = Color Protection:
    • Heat Protectant Heroes: Make sure they’re using sprays or serums before any heat styling.
    • Air Drying: If they can handle it, air drying is their hair’s BFF.
  4. Shield from the Sun:
    • UV Protectant Products: Recommend hair products with UV filters to protect against sun damage.
    • Cover Ups: Suggest rocking a hat or scarf when they’re out in the sun to to shield hair from direct sunlight and keep that colour fresh!
  5. Waterproof That Color:
    • Swim Cap Savvy: For clients who swim regularly, swim caps can protect hair from chlorine and saltwater.
    • Pre-Swim Conditioner: Applying a leave-in conditioner or hair oil before swimming creates a barrier against harsh water.
  6. Deep Conditioning Love:
    • Weekly Masks: Recommend a deep conditioning treatment every week. Coloured hair needs extra care and hydrated, nourished hair retains colour for longer. Tell them to try Crazy Color Bond Recovery Treatment which does exactly that.
    • Salon Treatments: Offer in-salon deep conditioning services as part of their maintenance routine for optimal results.
  7. Regular Color Touch-Ups:
    • Gloss Treatments: Encourage clients to come in for glossing treatments between major colour appointments to refresh and enhance their colour.
    • Root Touch-Ups: Regular root touch-ups can keep their colour fresh and even while their hair grows.
